Established in 1981, CCA is a private, not-for-profit agency that engages in direct service and research on issues of alternative-to-incarceration, substance abuse treatment and recovery, HIV and health and youth development. CCA operates alternative-to-incarceration programs in Syracuse, NY and NYC. In Syracuse, we provide a range of reentry services including recovery support, employment services, education planning, civic restoration services, case management; specific reentry services for people with HIV who are leaving prisons and the local jail; sentencing advocacy; and extensive work with young people suspended from school or involved in the juvenile justice system.
CCA has provided some level of workforce development services since 1996. We target these services to those who have had criminal justice system involvement and substance abuse history and to youth in middle and high school. CCA has a particular knowledge base and skill in providing services to this population which comes from an understanding of the multiple layers of issues and barriers faced by those with criminal and substance abuse histories. A number of staff have experienced and overcome these issues and are respected for their ability to engage populations who often feel isolated from the mainstream of society.
Our workforce development programming includes work readiness training, cognitive behavioral training, civic restoration, individual assessments, and job development, placement and retention activities. CCA is a certified testing site for the National Work Readiness Credential, which is endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the NYS Department of Labor. CCA staff are trained Offender Workforce Development Specialists (OWDS) and are trained to deliver Thinking for Change, a cognitive behavioral change training.
Services to youth include case management and transitional advocacy for students suspended from mainstream schools, cognitive behavioral therapy, youth and family therapy, mentoring, job readiness, community service-learning, violence prevention, peer leadership and after school activities.
